UPS carbon offset option available for Europe, Asia, American clients

LBR Staff Writer Published 14 January 2011

UPS has expanded its carbon neutral offering, which is now available for customers in Europe, Asia and the Americas as an option within the UPS WorldShip shipping system.

The company said that WorldShip customers can choose to pay a small fee to calculate and offset the carbon emissions associated with their shipments.

UPS collects the fees and uses the funds for environmentally responsible projects around the world and also matches the offset purchases up to $1m, doubling the impact of participation.

UPS senior vice president of global sales and marketing Alan Gershenhorn said this product was developed in response to customer demand for environmentally responsible shipping options.

"Now UPS carbon neutral will be accessible to the majority of our customer base," Gershenhorn said.

WorldShip is a Windows-based shipping software ideally suited to customers who ship five or more packages per day.

The company said that the calculation to measure the carbon (CO2) impact of the customers' shipments is based on current and historical operational data, including distance and transport mode and a comprehensive carbon inventory.
